Landscape - Closeups (Coastal Sage & Oak Woodlands)
As one travels farther south along the Pacific Flyway, there is less and less rain. While there are not significant departures between the elements of these paintings and the rainforest paintings, there are some noteworthy differences in the feelings these dryer woodland habitats evoke. Warmer colors dominate. I am still focused upon the complexity of interconnecting and contrasting shapes and patterns, and of worlds within worlds. Yet the lines in these paintings are a little more twisted, a little more dense. I find this offers more abstraction, more chaos in the way the shapes come together. Even with the subject of water in many of these compositions, the feeling is somehow harsher, less leafy and luxurious.
