Simplicity

These works are probably my most graphic, least complicated pieces, but compositionally, there are parallels with each page in this gallery. After filling every inch of the paper with shapes and landscapes, after exploring so much color and atmosphere, I feel it is necessary now and again to pare everything down to the most basic elements of the subject that attracted me in first place. Although I like the immediacy, the unforgiving-ness of working with ink, this is not an exercise in eliminating color, as evidenced by the intense color of the two hummingbird pieces. It is more a feeling that if the feathers are black, use ink. If the background is not informing, do not include it. It is about simplification when simple serves best.
